Lilac-Breasted Roller, Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) in Tanzania, Africa, near Ndutu, near sunset in shade.
Technical: Canon 1D Mark II 8-megapixel camera, Canon 500 mm f/4 L IS lens plus a 2x teleconverter giving 1,000 mm at f/8. Exposure: 1/10 second at ISO 400 with mirror lock-up. The low light level required a long exposure time and high ISO. This was a challenge from the lens mounted on the roof of the safari vehicle and people moving in the vehicle, causing a moving platform requiring a constantly moving subject due to the rocking vehicle. The image stabilization enabled a sharp image to be recorded. The background is the bark of the tree the bird was sitting in.
