SAMPLE_DESCRIPTION:

Water + montmorillonite SWy-2. SWy-2 is a Source Clay Minerals purchased sample and is from the same location as montmorillonite SWy-1, being a newer sampling of the deposit. See the montmorillonite SWy-1 sample description.

The montmorillonite SWy-2 was mixed with water.n various proportions. The mixture was actively stirred and spectra measured while the mix was still moving to minimize settling effects. Montmorillonite was added in the following proportions: 0.5, 1.67, 5.01, and 16.7 grams of montmorillonite per liter of distilled water. The 3 lower abundance montmorillonite mixtures were measured in a 17.5 cm diameter by 22 cm deep black plastic container, ensuring an optically thick path. The highest concentration was more like a paste and was measured in a 3 cm diameter by 5 cm deep black plastic film canister.

SPECTROSCOPIC_DISCUSSION:

Spectra are dominated by liquid water absorptions in the near infrared and by the montmorillonite reflectance in the visible to ultraviolet.
