LASIK

These pages are dedicated to LASIK experiences. I had LASIK in late 2000 and early 2001 (one eye at a time).

Current LASIK corrects for spherical and cylindrical, but not higher order corrections. From the people I've talked to and tested, few have perfect eyes. Test yours with the following two images. The first one shows the ideal in the center and my left and right eyes. Note how they do not show the ideal response (but my eyes correct to 20/25 or so). A "star" on the computer screen can be made out of focus by moving closer to the screen.

To conduct your own test, click on the image below and move you eyes closer to the screen (a dark room helps). As the "stars" move out of focus, note the uniformity. It is probably best to cover one eye and do the test one eye at a time. When in focus, do you see any "flare" or ghost images sticking out (a dark room is necessary)? If you have ghosts/flare, current LASIK will not help it, and depending no how the focus is changed, may make it appear worse. New LASIK, called custom correction is under development and will be available in the near future. Hopefully, it will correct these problems.

In my case, the small flare is different than it appeared before the surgery. I can, however, look at a star through a telescope and make the flare appear the way it did previous to LASIK surgery.
