During our 2009 trip to Tanzania, we did not want to spend all our time in a safari vehicle. We wanted to hike. We did several hikes, including in Lake Manayara National Park, and on the Serengeti near Ndutu. The experience was great and we will do more hikes on our next trip. Here are some of the experiences. During the hikes, we were remote and had no radios for communication. In some locations on the Serengeti, cell phones do work, but no guarantees.
We hiked with a guide in each area (a requirement). One guide carried no weapons at all. On one hike we were dropped of 7 kilometers from the lodge in the afternoon very close to where we saw a large pride of lions the day before. We were led by an armed Masai ranger. Here are some images from the hikes to illustrate why you should get out of those safari vehicles and get some exercise. You get a different perspective on the ground than in a vehicle, and you can explore things in more detail.
