High in a broken tree in Colorado, a great horned owl raises three baby owls. The owls were curious and watched sunrise after a before sunrise meal, then calmed down to sleep. The father owl was in a nearby tree, standing guard.
Technical. Canon 1D Mark IV 16-megapixel digital camera, 500 mm f/4 L IS lens + 2x teleconverter: ISO 800 at 1000 mm, f/8, 1/640 second. Many tree branches obscure this nest and branches run through this frame. But the very large aperture (125 mm diameter) lens gives a narrow depth of field and keeps the branches out of focus so they are not noticeable. This is a two frame high depth-of-field mosaic to keep all the birds in focus.
