Canon 1D mark II 8 megapisel digital camera, 500 mm f/4 L IS lens, 8 seconds ISO 100, f/5.6. The camera was on bulb, mirror lockup. I opened the shutter when I saw the flash of fireworks being launched, then closed the shutter before the fireworks started to fade. This avoids the droopy look of fireworks. Note, these were distant fireworks and the flames are intense and sub-pixel. If you are working closer to photograph fireworks, you probably will need f/8 or f/11.
