Bear Fishing below Brooks Falls

Brooks Falls, Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska. This is a context image for the Katmai brown bear photographs on this site. The bears fish for salmon (the red spots in the river), trying to bulk up for the winter's hibernation. Gulls will often place themselves downstream to catch pieces of fish that the bears drop. Other images from September 2004 were all obtained on the Brooks river either at or below the falls to the mouth of the river by Brooks Lodge.

Brown Bears have coats often tipped with a lighter color, giving a "grizzled" appearance. They also have a large lump of muscle above their shoulders. That muscle gives them great strength in their forelimbs. The Grizzly Bear is a sub-species of the Brown Bear. Brown Bears can weigh up to about 1500 pounds and can run at speeds of 35 miles per hour.
