This beautiful setting is in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, west of the town of Ridgway. October 1, 2003, about 8:50am. It was an extremely clear morning with little wind. I was alone so I was able experience the grand solitude.
Technical. This image is a mosaic of two large format, 4x5 (inch film), images, each scanned at 3200 pixels per inch at 16-bits per pixel. The assembled image is 23,440 x 11,840 pixels and requires 1.6 Gigabytes of disk space. Scanning and assembly of this mosaic required about 16-hours of work. The images were obtained on Fujichrome Velvia (ISO 50) film with a 210 mm lens. The detail in the image in a big enlargement is like you are standing there.
