The Mauna Loa, Hawaii eruption is quite spectacular. Viewing an eruption and the glowing red lava at night is an incredible experience. This image shows multiple fissures spewing lava, and several streams are flowing down hill. The clouds above the eruption are both rain clouds and clouds of toxic gas from the eruption. The rising heat causes a lot of turbulence with the shapes in the clouds constantly shift. The main fissure, fissure number 3, is the brightest area near center. Above left of Fissure 3 is a cloud with the shape of a face with a long nose, dark lips, dark hair, and above the hair, two dark protrusions that look like horns!
Color of the lava is only deep red. The dynamic range of the scene is orders of magnitude greater that any digital camera can record. The yellow areas are where the lava is so bright that the red channel is saturated and the green channel is bright (red + green = yellow). Visually the yellow areas were bright red.
Technical. This image was obtained with a stock Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Digital Camera and Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens at 117 mm. Exposure was 2 seconds at ISO 200, f/5. I did take a series of different exposures to build a high dynamic range composite.
