Aurora over Mount Sukakpak, Northern Alaska and the Dalton Highway, above the Arctic Circle #5246

A night of extraordinary aurora above the Arctic Circle, northern Alaska. An auroral curtains over Mount Sukakpak, whose peak is near 4400 feet elevation. The Dalton Highway is on the left in this view looking south. The temperature was around 4 degrees F and even though there were no coronal mass ejections from the Sun, and only low level geomagnetic activity predicted, the night was filled with all-sky colorful aurora. The aurora colors are yellow-green from oxygen emission at 557.5 nanometers at around 100 - 150 km altitude, and red oxygen emission at around 150 to 300 km altitude. Where the red is seen behind the green, the combination appears yellow. Visually, the greens and yellows were pastel green and yellow.

Technical. The image was obtained with a Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Digital Camera and a Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens (B&H).
with a single 10-second exposure at ISO 800, f/1.8. White balance is daylight. This is the full image, no crop.
