M8, the Lagoon Nebula and M20, the Trifid Nebula

M8, the Lagoon Nebula and M20, the Trifid Nebula in Sagittarius rises high in the summer for northern hemisphere observers.

Technical. Canon 1D Mark IV 16-megapixel digital camera, 300 mm f/2.8 L IS lens at f/2.8. Nine 1-minute exposures at ISO 1600. Nine minutes total exposure. Tracking with an Astrotrac (unguided). Aligned and the 9 images combined with sigma clipped average in ImagesPlus. No dark, no flats were used, nor were any needed. This is a full width crop from a vertical image. This image is 1/3 of full resolution.

The Exposure Factors, CEF, CEFA are measures of the relative amounts of light received from a subject. It can be used to fairly compare wildly different lens/telescope apertures and exposure times. For this image:
