A coronal mass ejection from the Sun created a G5-class geomagnetic storm May 10-11, 2024, with reports of aurora visible far south, including Florida. The geomagnetic Kp index was 9, which is very high. This image was obtained in the Colorado Rockies west of Denver. The aurora colors are yellow-green from oxygen emission at 557.5 nanometers at around 100 - 150 km altitude, and red oxygen emission at around 150 to 300 km altitude. Visually, the greens and reds were pastel green and red. The pink-purple is from nitrogen emission. The pillars were moving fast and are partly blurred in this short exposure. The image was made shortly after midnight, May 11, 2024.
Technical. The image was obtained with a Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Digital Camera and a Sigma 35 mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens (B&H) with a single 2-second exposure at ISO 800, f/1.4. White balance is daylight for natural color.
